Welcome to the 8th Edition of ENGAGE!
After a short break, we’re delighted to share that our Engage digital newsletter is back and from here on in, you can expect to receive our quarterly edition.
This latest issue reflects on the moments that matter, the lives changed one young person at a time, and what becomes possible when business meets community.
From confidence built to opportunities opened, these are the stories shaping real futures across our communities.
Enjoy, Team One In A Million

GOALS BEYOND THE STREETS
Our Streetwise programme has gone from strength to strength this year, continuing to unite young people through football, teamwork and positive choices.
The autumn Streetwise Finals were a powerful celebration following 10 weeks of activity across our community hubs. Young people from Windhill, Keighley, Manningham and Canterbury came together to showcase character, aspiration and unity. Guided by the theme “Goals Beyond The Streets: Play Smart – Live Right,” the tournament encouraged participants to aim higher both on and off the pitch. PC Huss (West Yorkshire Police) supported the programme with inspiring centre visits and talks promoting safer, more positive futures.

Our Girl’s Streetwise programme was another highlight, bringing girls together in Manningham to develop skills, confidence and friendships while enjoying the game they love.

A huge thank you to Dream Makers for supporting Streetwise Day for the third year running. This year, we welcomed 41 young people from across our centres for a full day of mixed-team football. PC Huss reinforced key messages around positive choices, friendships, anti-social behaviour and staying safe.
As we look ahead to our 20th year in 2026, we celebrate the programme that started it all—using the beautiful game to inspire, unite and change lives.

WRESTLING SELF DOUBT: NEW DEVELOPMENT CENTRE OFF TO A FLYING START
In 2025, One In A Million launched a new Wrestling Development Centre, using a creative blend of sport and performance to build confidence, resilience and wellbeing among children and young people.
The programme began with a Taster Course at the Shipley Hub, led by Gareth Thompson, founder of Kingdom Wrestling. Drawn to OIAM’s commitment to helping young people thrive, Gareth saw wrestling as a powerful tool for character development and observed a marked shift in self-belief and teamwork, with initially shy participants growing in confidence and leadership.

Reflecting on the experience, Gareth said: “I was inspired by One In A Million’s incredible commitment to providing opportunities for young people in Bradford to thrive. Seeing their passion for community matched my own desire to use wrestling as a tool to build confidence and character in the next generation.”
He added: “I’ve seen a massive shift in their self-belief and teamwork; young people who were initially shy are now standing tall and leading their peers. The sessions have given them a safe space to channel their energy, learn discipline, and realise that they are capable of achieving far more than they thought possible.”
Following strong uptake, the programme developed into a Development Centre involving participants from the Shipley and Woodside Hubs. Sessions expanded to include performing arts, scriptwriting and event production alongside physical training, helping young people learn how to recover from setbacks while building focus, emotional balance and resilience.
Early outcomes show improved confidence, participation and wellbeing as the programme continues to grow within OIAM’s wider pathways offer.

COOK & EAT: ON THE MENU
From knife skills to sautéing, baking to frying, our Cook & Eat Development Centre has helped our young people to develop life skills that go a long way in boosting confidence, and giving them the opportunity to try something new every week. Here’s a look back on some top dishes of 2025…

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS AT DOE PARK!
Our 2025 trip to Doe Park; although fantastically fun, gave our young people a vital opportunity to challenge themselves, build confidence, and create lasting memories.
Starting off at the climbing wall, we were so impressed with the young people’s tenacity and resilience, many of them conquering their fear of heights! “I got higher than last time, even though I felt scared.” - Freya. “I want to do every single one, whatever it takes!” - Bjorn
Next up, the sky-high obstacle course… “I’m conquering my fear of heights!” - Jayden.

And finally, a dip in the lake, learning how to kayak.

A fantastic experience all round, we’re so proud of our young people for conquering fears, encouraging each other, and practising their teamwork out in the world. We can’t wait for Doe Park 2026!

ENJOY YOURS- ELF: A CHRISTMAS TRIP TO BRADFORD LIVE
This Christmas, One In A Million Charity was delighted to create a truly magical experience for our children and young people, made possible by the extraordinary generosity of 33 tickets donated through Life Church Bradford.
Children from our Woodside, Windhill, Manningham, Keighley and Canterbury hubs enjoyed an unforgettable afternoon at Bradford Live, watching Elf The Musical. For many, it was their first visit to a live performance venue. One young person shared, “I loved it so much. I’ve never been anywhere like this before.”

The auditorium was filled with laughter as music, colour and storytelling brought the Christmas spirit to life. The experience sparked joy, confidence and even new dreams — “The show was AMAZING! I want to learn to sing like that one day!”.
We are incredibly grateful to Life Church Bradford and their anonymous donor for making this possible. Experiences like these are at the heart of what One In A Million exists to do — opening doors, inspiring hope and celebrating potential - “I’m so thankful I got the chance to come to this, thank you for inviting me."

WORLD OF WORK
Our Children and Young People continue to benefit from our wonderful Corporate Partnerships and world of work programme. Here's a look back on a few highlights!
A WORLD OF WORK VISIT TO FORTEM PEOPLE:
During February half-term, 21 young people from our Windhill, Manningham and Keighley centres took part in a World of Work adventure at Fortem People.
Set in the beautiful countryside of Skipton, the day offered an inspiring introduction to future careers through fun, hands-on activities. Young people explored different job roles through games, discussed personality types and how these link to the world of work, and reflected on their own strengths and qualities.
The sessions sparked confidence and aspiration. One young person shared, “This is helpful as I’ve just picked my GCSE options,” while another reflected, “Personality types are important in the world of work to show people’s qualities.” The countryside setting even inspired new ambitions - “I want to work in the countryside now and own a farm.”
A huge thank you to the Fortem People team for such a warm welcome and engaging experience. The visit made a lasting impression and helped our young people see new possibilities for their future.

CAREERS EXPO
Our annual Career Expo brought together nine Corporate Partners and three external exhibitors, engaging over 120 secondary school students in meaningful conversations about future pathways. From law and finance to manufacturing and HR, young people gained insight into careers they may never have encountered otherwise.
The Expo continues to provide essential exposure, guidance and inspiration — all strengthened through the collective commitment of our valued partners.

WORLD OF WORK: THE IMPACT (KAYLEIGH'S STORY)
Kayleigh’s journey is a powerful example of how One In A Million’s World of Work (WOW) programme and development pathways open doors and build confidence over time.
Kayleigh first engaged with One In A Million through Kidz Club and Youth Club in Windhill, where consistent relationships and encouragement led to her being offered an opportunity to go on a WOW experience, designed to broaden horizons and introduce young people to future career possibilities.
In 2023, during a World of Work visit to corporate partner Emerald Group Publishing, Kayleigh (then aged 15) showed a strong interest in publishing. She connected with Emerald’s Inclusion Lead, Danielle Ormshaw, who saw her potential and offered to mentor her — an opportunity Kayleigh never expected.
“Having my own mentorship is an opportunity I never thought a girl like me would have. Danielle hasn’t just been a leader — she’s become a wonderful friend.” Kayleigh.
Supported by Anna, her OIAM Community Activator and the Emerald team, this connection developed into a formal mentorship. Through it, Kayleigh’s confidence grew, her aspirations widened, and she began writing a book about dyslexia — a subject close to her heart.
“This mentorship has made my dreams possible. They’ve helped me grow and pushed me to where I am today.” Kayleigh.
Now 17, Kayleigh has written multiple drafts of her book and, with mentoring support, applied to university. She has been accepted to her first-choice university, becoming the first in her family to take this step.
“Creating my own work sounds unbelievable — but it’s true. I can proudly say I’m going to university.”
Kayleigh’s story shows what’s possible when trusted relationships, opportunity and belief come together — and how long-term pathways can change a life’s direction.
We'd like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all Emerald Group Publishing, for your continued support.

TRAINEESHIP
In September 2023, we launched our new traineeship programme, and we are delighted to share its progress and introduce our current Trainee!
A REMINDER: WHAT IS OUR TRAINEESHIP PROGRAMME?
Our Traineeship programme offers young people who have grown up in our work a pathway into formal employment, combining paid part-time roles with the completion of Level 1 and 2 Youth Awards in partnership with Bradford College. Trainees split their time between college study and hands-on work in our community hubs, supporting programme delivery.
Alongside developing practical skills in areas such as safeguarding, administration, data recording, equipment management and virtual support, trainees build meaningful relationships with children and act as positive role models who reflect our values.

MEET DANIEL:
"Being a Trainee with One In A Million has helped me find my passion for youth work. I help plan and develop sessions, and work with the kids club and youth club, and I have gained several qualifications – including for forest schools training, food hygiene and youth work. I love facing new challenges which take me out of my comfort zone, and with the team’s support, I get to lead some of the sessions. Now I feel really excited about the future.” - Daniel.
2025 was filled with exciting projects and opportunities that Daniel was able to be a part of and contribute to, including creating a mini Orchard... Read all about it by clicking the link below.

HAGIE'S STORY:
You may remember the story of our first-ever trainee, Hagie, from previous news stories and articles. Having completed his traineeship and Level 3 Youth Award, we are delighted to update that Hagie is out in the working world! Though we are, of course, saddened to lose him, we are so proud of all he has achieved and are excited for him to flourish in his new employment. From attendee, to trainee, to employee, it's been a privilege to be a part of Hagie's journey. Hagie, YOU ARE ONE IN A MILLION!

SIMON THOMAS: HOPE, RESILIENCE, AND TRIUMPH ON THE GREENHOLME CHALLENGE
At One In A Million, we are inspired daily by stories of resilience and generosity—and Simon Thomas’s Greenholme 50-Mile Challenge is a powerful example of both.
On 31st October, Simon, aged 65, set out from Valley Parade to walk an incredible 50 miles across West Yorkshire, raising vital funds for the children and young people we support. Just five months earlier, Simon had suffered a brain haemorrhage and could barely walk 200 metres. His determination to not only attempt but complete this challenge is a remarkable testament to recovery, hope and the human spirit.
Simon’s route took him from Valley Parade to Greenholme partner sites across Yeadon, Guiseley, Otley and Skipton, before returning to Valley Parade. Along the way, he was supported by family, friends and members of the One In A Million team.

“This challenge is more than just a walk—it’s a celebration of recovery and resilience,” Simon shared. “Every step is for the children and young people across Bradford.”
We are deeply grateful to Simon for going the extra mile. His courage reflects the spirit of our young people—never giving up, even when the journey is tough. Simon, you truly are one in a million.

Together, every mile walked, and every pound donated turns hope into opportunity for the next generation.

'SPORTING LUNCH' RAISES £11,000!
On Friday 17th October 2025, One In A Million was honoured to be chosen as the beneficiary charity for the annual Sporting Lunch at the Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley. The event brought together a brilliant mix of supporters for an afternoon of great food, lively entertainment and generous fundraising.
Expertly organised by Tracy Buckley and Chris Allen (Blacks Solicitors), John Beevers (AAB Group) and John Durkan (Switalskis), with generous prize donations from Northern Monk and The Lingholme Estate. The lunch created a fantastic atmosphere and raised an incredible £11,000 for our work with children and young people across Bradford.
Guests enjoyed a two-course meal, hosted by Pete Emmett, with the highlight being an inspiring live interview with double Olympic gold medallist Alistair Brownlee OBE!
