WRESTLING SELF-DOUBT: NEW DEVELOPMENT CENTRE REACHES NEW HEIGHTS

In 2025, we launched an exciting and unique Development Centre that has proven to be incredibly popular amongst our children and young people: wrestling!

Our taster course ran from May-June at our Shipley Hub where Gareth Thompson, founder of Kingdom Wrestling, introduced the sport and theatrical concepts. The young people were delighted to try on Gareth’s belt and showed great interest from the first session. “That’s heavy! Even for a strong person like me!” - Elloura. (on wearing Gareth’s wrestling belt). “I look like a future wrestling champion!” - Isaac

Over the following weeks, we explored the dramatic elements of wrestling, learning how to react to staged punches and practising the basic but vital moves in a safe and supportive environment - a huge confidence booster!

After a successful Taster Course we launched our Development Centre sessions with a mixture of young people from our Shipley and Woodside Hubs. The sessions covered a wide range of topics, including performing arts, event production/management, scriptwriting… and a flip or two!  The enthusiasm was palpable. “I’m getting super confident at it now!” - Lewis. “I can balance on the ropes without help now.” - Jayden

We interviewed Gareth to hear more about his passion for wrestling and the impact the Development Centre is having on our children and young people.

What inspired you to join us for Taster/Development sessions?

I was inspired by One In A Million’s incredible commitment to providing opportunities for young people in Bradford to thrive. Seeing your passion for community matched my own desire to use wrestling as a tool to build confidence and character in the next generation.

What impact have the sessions had on our children & young people?

I've seen a massive shift in their self-belief and teamwork; students who were initially shy are now standing tall and leading their peers. The sessions have given them a safe space to channel their energy, learn discipline, and realise that they are capable of achieving far more than they thought possible.

Why do you think wrestling/sport are important for growth and wellbeing?

Sport teaches resilience by showing you how to get back up after a fall, which is a vital lesson for life's challenges. Wrestling, specifically, promotes physical health while sharpening the mind, helping young people develop the focus and emotional balance they need to succeed both in and out of the ring.

We’d like to say a big thank you to Gareth, Josh and the Kingdom Wrestling team for your passion, energy, commitment and care. Our children and young people are shining with growing confidence and enthusiasm.

We look forward to seeing our Wrestling Development Centre reach new heights in the coming year!
