The Power of Law: Our World of Work trip to Blacks Solicitors!

Yesterday, we travelled to Leeds with 10 young people from Windhill, to explore Blacks Solicitors HQ as part of our World of Work programme.

"I learnt that you can do anything you put your mind to." - Rebecca.

"I think I might go into law when I'm older"- Kai.

Our jam-packed day began with an exciting train journey to Leeds station, where we met Chris (Managing Partner) & Olivia under the Blacks advertisement board.

"This is getting me ready for when I have to get the train to college." - Coen.

"I've never been to Leeds on a train before." - Lola.

We then travelled on to Blacks HQ where we had an informative Q&A session with a group of employees. The youngsters were able to ask questions about how to choose the right career, and learn about the characteristics/ values of a good employee.

"How do you choose the GCSEs to get into your job?" - Freya.

"I learned that I don't have to rush. There's different ways to get a job in law." - Lottie.

We also had a tour around the entire office. The young people split into two groups to explore all the different departments; having the chance to try out sound-proof meeting pods, which they found very intriguing.

After a very busy morning, we were treated to lunch at Vito's- a lovely Italian restaurant. A wonderful opportunity for Chris and the young people to get to know each other more.

"I'm so excited to eat all the pizza and pasta at an Italian restaurant!" - Kai.

Once we'd finished our meal, Chris gave us a tour of the different courthouses around Leeds. We visited the Crown Court, Magistrates, and Law Court, learning about the purpose and differences between each one.

"Are we going to a REAL court?" - Lottie.

"I liked walking to the courts- I learned new words like 'litigation'" - Lola.

To round off a busy day, we enjoyed a round of bowling. Work hard, play hard!

"I can't believe I got a strike on my first go!" - Coen.

An unexpected and delightful outcome of the day was Rebecca telling Chris & Dev about her bracelet making business. A young entrepreneur, Rebecca has been making bracelets for a while and will even be attending a craft fair in the near future.

"Chris & Dev want to collaborate with my bracelet business, so he's given me his contact details... I'm collaborating with big businesses already, I'm doing really well!" - Rebecca.

Rebecca was so excited, that she immediately got to work on some Blacks-themed bracelets, which she sent to Chris & Dev as a 'thank you' for a wonderful day.

We'd also like to say a huge THANK YOU to Chris, Olivia, Dev and the wonderful Blacks team for your enthusiasm, hospitality, understanding & cooperation. The young people had a fantastic, informative trip into the World of Work!

"Every day is different when you work in law. When I get home I'm going to tell my friends that I've been at work!" - Lola.
