Dear Parent/Carer,

As of Monday 24th February 2025, One In A Million Free School will use ClassCharts to record student behaviour.

This online system is used by thousands of schools across the country.

ClassCharts will allow you to keep track of your child’s behaviour throughout the school day, keep up to date with their weekly achievements, and track scheduled detentions.

The system will also be used to post whole school announcements, including important reminders and information. School work will also be posted on this platform during times when school has to close, such as the recent snow days.

We believe in working closely with Parents/Carers and a key advantage of Class Charts is that we are able to securely share your child’s achievement and behaviour report; this means you are kept up to date in real-time.

All Parents/Carers will have a unique login for their child. If you have more than one child at the school, you can access ClassCharts information about all your children from a single centralised parent account. Your unique login details and how to access ClassCharts will be sent home with your child on Monday the 3rd of February.

Please ensure you have registered and accessed your ClassCharts account by 12th February 2025.

If you need help activating your account, drop in sessions will be held in school on the 10th, 11th and 12th of February at 2pm.

Growing Up in the 2020s is a new national study of young people in England attending secondary school, and their families. By following young people and their families over time, the study aims to provide a contemporary understanding of how young people’s school, home life and relationships shape their attainment, wellbeing, and post-16 destinations. The study focuses on the opportunities and challenges facing young people during an important time in their lives and when the effects of the pandemic are still being felt by some.

You do not need to do anything now – our interviewers will contact families directly.

For the first stage of the study, the research organisation Ipsos will be sending letters to the parents or guardians of the selected young people at their home address, from January 2025. Ipsos interviewers will arrange interviews with parents and young people at their home address, if they agree to take part. The information posted to families will list the various ways to get in touch with the study team, should they have questions about participating or opting out.

Understandably, families may also contact your school to verify the legitimacy of the research. If so, then we ask that you provide reassurance that this is an official DfE study.

Teacher survey in summer term 2025: To build a more complete picture of young people’s experiences it is really important that we also collect information from teachers. With permission from the young person and their parent/carer, we will ask a pupil’s form tutor or nominated teacher to complete a short online survey to get a more detailed picture about how they are getting on at your school. Ipsos will get in touch with the teachers directly later this year, explaining how they can take part in the teacher survey.

For more information, please read the letter for head teachers and school staff which includes more information about the study and an FAQs section. You can also visit the study website and find the study listed on the official DfE research page

You may wish to forward this communication to other staff at your school who interact with Year 8 pupils and their parents/carers.

Update: Year 7 and 8 Students Receive Their Book Buzz Choices!

We are delighted to announce that our Year 7 and 8 students at One In A Million Free School (OIAMFS) have now received their selected books from the Book Buzz scheme—and they’re diving into them with enthusiasm! The sight of students engrossed in their chosen stories is truly inspiring, and we’re excited to see how these books spark their imaginations and passion for reading.

The benefits of reading are vast and impactful. Not only does reading improve literacy skills and expand vocabulary, but it also enhances critical thinking, empathy, and creativity. Through reading, students can explore diverse perspectives, build cultural awareness, and strengthen their ability to focus—skills that will support them both academically and personally.

The Book Buzz scheme has given students the chance to connect with literature on their own terms, allowing them to explore new genres and topics that resonate with them individually. This freedom of choice is helping to foster a genuine love for reading, which we believe will carry forward into their future.

Thank you to the Book Trust for making this opportunity possible, and congratulations to our students for embracing their new books with such excitement!

Keep reading, OIAMFS!

According to the National Literacy Trust, in 2023, only 43% of children and young people aged between 8 and 18 said they enjoyed reading in their free time. At One In A Million Free School we are working hard to instil a love of reading for our students.

Our library is now full of engaging and appropriate books for our students, including books chosen by our students. Our library has been designed to make it easier for our students to choose and find books. Our library showcases themed books (see our spooky Halloween display) and also displays books that are recommended by other students.

To promote reading for pleasure across the school:

Every KS3 student now has a reading book from the library that they bring to school every day

We have a designated library lesson once a week for KS3 students

Running at the same time as this, are our Phonics classes for students who require more support with their reading

KS3 students receive a designated vocabulary lesson once a week where they use Bedrock Learning to support their literacy

Any KS4 students who require additional support in their reading receive three Step Up To English lessons a week

Y7 - Y10 Form Tutors read three times a week to their form. Each year group votes for a different book that they want to hear and read.

Students that require additional support with their reading have 1:1 reading sessions with members of staff (including SLT) four times a week

Selected students in KS3 who require additional support with their reading have a Y10 Reading Buddy who they read to twice a week

Pupil Premium students in Y7 and Y8 received six Letterbox Parcels across the year which contained books and numeracy resources

Our subject teachers also teach subject specific words (called Tier 3 words) in lessons.

This year we have also gifted all Year 7 and Year 8 students with a free book of their choice. Through the National Literacy Trust BookBuzz project, students have chosen a book from sixteen titles that were selected by experts. The books will be given to students next half term.

Please can we ask you to support your child in their reading and if possible read with your child, listen to them read their book to you or simply just ask them about their book. Another piece of research from the National Literacy Trust suggested that children are 40% more likely to enjoy reading if their parents do. So, if you would like to get in touch with school about supporting your child's reading or developing your own reading then please contact Mr. Coles (Vice Principal).

Happy Reading!

That's why we’re excited to continue promoting reading for pleasure by participating in the Book Buzz scheme, run by the Book Trust.

Through this fantastic initiative, every Year 7 and 8 student at OIAMFS will have the opportunity to select a book from a choice of 16 exciting titles—completely free! The best part? Each student gets to keep the book they choose.

This initiative is designed to inspire our students to dive into new worlds, discover new genres, and explore the joy of reading outside the classroom. We hope that by giving students the freedom to choose their own book, we can help them develop a personal connection with literature that lasts a lifetime.

Stay tuned as we work with students to make their selections and share some of the titles they’ve picked!

The One In A Million Free School building is closing today from 1:45pm on 08/02/2024 due to adverse weather conditions.

We have not taken the decision to close the school lightly, as we know every school day counts towards students’ learning and progress. However, we do have to prioritise the health and safety of our students and staff. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

We are looking to open as normal tomorrow morning (Friday 09/02/2024) as the forecast suggests that the snow should have cleared.

Kind Regards,
Mrs Hobbs, Principal
