Important News: Change of age range consultation letter

Monday, 17th October 2022

Dear Stakeholder,

Change of age range consultation at One In A Million Free School (OIAMFS)

As a member of the school and/or another local community provision, you have a perceived stake in the future of OIAMFS. Therefore, we are writing to consult you on a proposed change to the school’s age range. The current age range of the school is 11-18 years, and we are proposing to lower this to 11-16 years with immediate effect.

The school needs to consult on the proposed changes in line with the 2022 Department for Education ‘Making significant changes to an open academy and closure by mutual agreement’ guidance, which is available here.

We wish to receive the views and comments of all perceived stakeholders involved with the schools. The consultation period runs for four weeks from Monday, 17th October 2022 to Sunday, 20th November 2022 (allowing for the 1-week half-term holiday). All comments received during this time will be considered.

The proposal

We are proposing to lower the age range of children attending OIAMFS from 11-18 years to 11-16 years.

Why is the school proposing this change?

The age range change is required as the school is at maximum capacity with students in Year 7 to 11. There are insufficient rooms, social spaces or specialised teachers to deliver a post 16 curriculum.

The benefits:

  • Broad and balanced KS3 and KS4 curriculum, with specialist teachers.
  • In line with the school’s vision and values maximum class sizes of 25 students.
  • Adequate number of classrooms and social spaces for students to feel safe.
  • Age appropriate teaching and learning environment for students.
  • Students are prepared and informed in order to move onto specialised post 16 provisions or apprenticeships providers across Bradford.

What happens next?

The consultation will be for a period of four weeks, commencing on Monday, 17th October 2021 and closing on Sunday, 20th November 2022 (allowing for the one week half-term holiday). At the end of the consultation period, all comments will be considered by the school and a decision will be made as to whether to proceed with the next stage of the process as outlined in the Department for Education’s guidance.
