Goal! Successful Streetwise Finals; Youngsters compete for the Gurmit Chand Memorial Cup.

On Friday 22nd March 2024, we held our much anticipated Streetwise 5-A-Side finals

Streetwise is our 11-week  Friday night football project that we run thrice per year. Each project finishes with an epic final where our youngsters from across the district come together to compete for the Gurmit Chand Memorial Cup.

Our theme of 'The Body Keeps The Score' continued from January to March. During each session, our team gave out reinforcing messages and encouraged the children and young people to scan QR codes that took them to a page on our website where they could watch short films by sports professionals speaking about physical health and mental wellbeing, substance abuse, exercise and nutrition.

A big well done to all 200+ players who joined us for this season's project, and to the 83 players who made it to the finals. Huge congratulations to our winning teams; Bierley FC (seniors) and Manningham Excel (juniors)!

"I love coming to Streetwise and being able to have the opportunity to play football on a decent surface every week. It's good to play alongside my friends and, of course, get better at football". Andrew, Keighley, Winner of the OIAM Values award.

Danny Forrest, OIAM Community Pathways Officer: “Our Streetwise finals night was a fantastic event, and it was heart-warming to see over 80 children and young people competing on the night. It was great to see young people from Shipley, Manningham, Keighley, South Bradford and Canterbury all conducting themselves in such a great manner, and it was even more pleasing to see some of the cross community cohesion.

The tournament was played in a competitive but friendly manner. A tournament fitting of our late and beloved colleague Gurmit Chand, after which our winner's shield is now named in order to honour his legacy".
